Tom Ferguson's Yamaha DT-1 Short Tracker

Tom has been racing DT-1s since 1973 and he learnt early on that to transform them from a play bike to a hook and book Flat Tracker, you lower the frame two inches. When they announced the new 250 framer class at Camp Lockert, Tom got busy putting this bike together. I asked him about the red tubing he used and found it came from his old Off Road racer. Tom gave up motorsickle racing in the mid 80s to try his luck on 4 wheels. Living in San Diego, desert racing is huge and he concentrated on the Baja 1000 and 500s but raced all over the South West in the different organizations events. These photos show the same car as it was developed over the years. These cars get totally thrashed and are changed and rebuilt and redesigned and re-engineered after every race.

Here is the car in its red frame stage that the section came from for the lowered Yamaha. The damaged section was cut off and kept for when he might need such a piece. Tom is a master fabricator by trade and these guys have trouble throwing away good usable metal. This race was in Parker, Arizona and it is snowing !. Doesn't happen very often in desert racing.
