Ascot, a Mini and a Duck in 1965.

Came across this incredible photo from Ascot Park, Gardena, California in 1965. Good Ol' Agie ,the guy who owned and ran Ascot was a typical hustler of the era. Always looking for ways to make money, so he had events as often as possible at the track. In this instance it was a sports car meet where they used both the 1/4 Mile and 1/2 Mile tracks together. I went to a similar deal in about 1983 with my bud Nick Van Nuecktren who was the Factory Mazda Rally racer. He was the S.E. Asian Rally Champ from Singapore and he came here and Mazda gave him RX7s which he built and rally-ed. The event was one car at a time, starting on the quarter mile and then fanning out onto the half mile, to complete one timed lap. A real tight lap on the inside and then a high speed lap on the outside. Some fun. Nick did great, hanging the screaming rotary out all around both tracks. This photo looks like exactly the same kind of event. The duck looks completely nonplussed as it lived with many others in the little lake, inside the track . It surely was used to all kinds of wide open exhausts. The only thing that would have bothered that duck is when the occasional car or bike ended up in there. And they did.
