Jimmy McMurren National # 11

Jim out front at Santa Fe 5.28.69.  Three Harley Sprints, 55 Roger Reiman, Jim and Breslford followed by two Triumphs of Chuck Palmgren and Gene Romero. Santa Fe with its weekly racing schedule was the epicenter of Flat Track in those days. Jim, Cal Rayborn and Sid Carlson who were all grade school buddies, left San Diego in the summer time and went on the Mid-West State Fair Circuit and hit every outlaw race in between. What a delightful way to spend your youth. Jim has been gone now for several years and we miss him dearly down here in 'Dago.
Cal just about gets taken out by the Montesa Rigid # 63 who is off the gas and looking at Cal's rear wheel.
Jim and Sid Carlson who appears to be riding Jim's spare bike. These guys had big bikes too but loved this small bore racing. Jim was known as a Sprint Specialist and he enjoyed them his whole life. He quit racing them late in life and then Tom Ferguson who sent me these shots, won four SCFTA Classic Brakeless Championships on Jims bikes. Jim fettled them and Tom twisted the throttle. Those guys had loads of fun all the way up to Jim's unfortunate demise. But Santa Fe was where it was at and Jim truly loved the place.
