Riverside Raceway 1965 and Gene Davis has had enough of being blocked by Parnelli and does what was common is those days, attempts a pass in the dirt. The long winding track from Turn 2 down through the Esses to Turn 6 had a few spots where this move was possible. I think Gene pick the wrong spot however. Riverside was a wonderful track especially for spectators. At this section the crowd lined up along the entire fence and you could see all the action from your vantage point 10 feet above the track, perfect. Living in So Cal you get to remember all the great times when you drive by what used to be the track. When you are on the 60 you look down at a boring and mundane neighborhood with crummy shopping centers and closely packed houses and you can only sigh and recall what was and it was really something. Yesterday I was on the 405 going south to Dago and had to look over where Ascot used to slide. Damn, what a shame. America's most famous and beloved dirt track replaced by some non descript, urban industrial sprawl. Thats a crying shame. Same thing with The Corona Half Mile. Drive by on the 91 and its cheap housing and Circle Ks. Well, thank goodness we have our fine memories because that is certainly what is left of these hallowed grounds of speed and excitement.
