Canepa-Newman Pikes Peak Porsche

As far as Race Cars go, this is one of my favorites. In 1980, Bruce Canepa and Paul Newman ( Yep, that Paul Newman) fine honed a Draega-Newman Ascot Sprint Buggy into a full on Dirt Monster, specifically to win the Pikes Peak Hillclimb with a Twin Turbo, F.I., 930 engine and trans-axle. Bruce Canepa was on a record run when he rounded a high speed corner only to encounter a woman running across the track, right on the racing line. He spun it avoiding her and very fortunately was able to get it going again and ended up taking second place. The oh so territorial and persnickety Pike Peak Assoc. saw the huge potential of the car and promptly banned it, ending the development of one of the coolest race cars ever.
