Phil Hill was America's first F1 World Champ driving for Ferrari in 1961. Phil was from Santa Monica, Los Angeles , Calif. He cut his racing teeth at the local Half Mile dirt track, Carrell Speedway. He first gained notoriety driving his own MG TC Special in the Foreign Stock class, racing against other imported sports cars of the time. They ran clockwise on the track which was completely backwards but a novelty I guess. Phil's obvious talent got him some drives in real hot rods of the day like this Alfa 8C which he has crossed up going the right direction at Carrell. They say if you can win on the dirt, you can win anywhere which proved true for Phil when he got the most prestigious seat in F1, Factory Ferrari Driver.
