The San Diego "Los Ancianos Motorcycle Club" celebrated their 50th Anniversary this last weekend. Catalina wasn't the only classic race that took part in So Cal. The Old Dudes( loose translation) was formed in 1960 and have run their big annual event in Tecate, Mexico, right on the Border and 40 miles east of Tijuana, every year. Originally a two day 500 hundred mile enduro, this year a 100 miler attracted the top American Enduro, ISDT and Baja racers including riders from Mexico, Canada, France and Italy. All enjoyed the fantastic big boulder terrain and the loamy granite soil, challenging single track. Malcolm Smith rode the race and flew out by private plane to Catalina where he raced on Sunday. You had to be 30 or older to join the club when it was formed. That might have been old to be riding dirt bikes back then, but today our local Vintage MX Club, the 60+ class is the largest and the 70+ group at Catalina was well populated. Its not that you are too old to ride, its you get old, not riding!
